Michael’s Message: Annual Meeting and Election
“And then there were 13!”
Be sure to attend the Annual Membership Meeting and Election at 3:00pm, Tuesday, October 27, in the main Activity Room. Come for refreshments, exciting updates, a video featuring our members, and announcement of the election winners! The election and meeting are your chances to participate in our future!
In a few days, you will be receiving your ballot in the mail to vote for SIX board members to terms that begin January 1, 2016. We have some excellent incumbents running and some exciting new folks running as well. You must return your ballot by mail OR in person to the ballot box in the office by 3:00pm, October 27. To help you select the best qualified candidates, candidate bios and photos will be included with your ballot.
As it is authorized to do, the board voted to revise by bylaws (adopted May 12, 2015) to increase the maximum number of board members from the current 11 to as many as 15. This will spread out the workload to help us get more done, especially as we gear up to raise significant funds towards a new Center building. The board decided to do this in crements, adding two board seats in 2016, bringing the board to 13 members. A decision will be made at a later date as to if and when to go to a full 15 member size.
According to the bylaws, the 3-year terms are staggered so that each year 1/3 of the board is up for election. Having 2/3 of the board remain the same each year helps with continuity and consistency on the board. Board members can be elected to a maimum of two 3-year terms in a row, and then must take a year off. With 13 board members, the election is for 5 people, then 4 people a year later, and then 4 people a year after that. To add two people, one will be added to the 4 positions normally open this year to get 5 people to serve full 3-year terms. The way it works out, we need to elect a 6th person to a 1-year term for a full complement of 13 board members, to continue the 5-4-4 pattern.
Please look the candidate statements over carefully and vote for the six (or fewer) candidates you feel are best qualified to serve on your Board of Directors. Either mail or bring you ballot so that it is received by 3:00pm on the 27th to be counted. A clearly marked ballot box will be in the office to receive your ballot.
Plan to attend on Tuesday, October 27, at 3:00pm. Refreshments will be served, and it will be a good time to meet your board members and candidates. Board members will give reports about the past years’ accomplishments. You will be given the opportunity to ask the leadership team about the Center, its activities, and its future. At the end of the meeting, Board President, Joe Borden, Chairman of the Nominating Committee, will announce the winners of the 2016 board election.
I hope to see you there!
