Michael’s Message - November Potpourri
As we welcome fall and the holiday season, I’d like to share a potpourri of facts, updates and thoughts:
People DO read The Center News! A few examples of how I know:
- Our very first buffet luncheon (instead of potluck) was a great success, with over 40 people enjoying a great meal from our Café for just $4! Thank you to sponsor Jan from Dungeness Courte for the nice mugs and goodies! Next buffet is Tuesday November 20th. Call the office to reserve a spot.
- Our new earlier opening time of 9am sharp means that more of you are enjoying breakfast at The Café! So far, 23 diners have filled out their “Proud Shipley Café Regular” cards, with a commitment of 100+ meals a month! Come in, like Board Treasurer Don Gerber did, and get your card; let’s fill up that wall AND fill up our tummies at OUR Café!
- At least 2 people read my July article on the tax advantages of giving directly from your IRA using a QCD, or Qualified Charitable Distribution. Their IRA trustees, at their direction, sent in a combined $2,800 for our general fund. If you want to “get in on the tax savings” contact me or your IRA trustee about doing a “QCD”, perhaps with your “RMD” (Required Minimum Distribution) by the “EOY”(End of Year)!
Shopping Therapy is a Real Thing
Get your shopping therapy “fix” at our Holiday Bazaar – Nov 2 & 3, where you will find great gift items for those you love. This successful annual event is just full of festive fun. Food is available both days from The Café, too! Try to shop locally as much as possible and support Sequim businesses and craftspeople that support your Center.
If you do shop online using Amazon, be sure to replace “www” with “smile” as in smile.amazon.com and then choose “Sequim Senior Services” as your charity of choice. That way, every time you shop, your Center will get half a percent to help seniors who cannot afford a membership. When shopping, always look to see that we are listed at the top of the page as shown here.
Yes, we are still moving forward with plans to build the Health & Wellness Annex
As they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day. We hope our project does not take as long as Rome did! We are still working on Civil and Structural engineering details, but getting closer and closer all the time. During November, as the engineers finish up, the landscape designers will be submitting her drawings. All of this is in preparation for applying for our City of Sequim building permit. Flooring samples have arrived and we are choosing the best flooring for the kitchen/classroom and a different flooring for the gym/fitness room. We want surfaces that will not be damaged by water, tables, chairs, bouncing balls, lively exercisers, etc. We also want it to be attractive, easy on those exercising knees, and safe. The kitchen layout is being designed with help from several experts in culinary education. I want to take this opportunity to thank one faithful donor who has very generously given $1,000 an amazing 5 times this year! With everyone’s help we will make this a reality and be enjoying our new Health & Wellness Annex in mid-late 2019.
Tote Bag for new MGM givers!
Last month I mentioned our large quality canvas tote bag that new Members Giving Monthly donors receive when they sign up to give just $10 per month or more. (Existing MGM members can increase their donation by $10 per month get a tote bag, too)! I thought you’d like to see a photo of it. They are very handy. Some of our exercisers use them to carry their towel, hand weights and water bottle. Some of our crafters use them to hold yarn and their latest projects, and readers us them for books and more! Please consider adding your name at $10, $25, $30, $50, $100 or some other monthly amount to our growing list of sustaining donors in our MGM club! See me any time to set it up!
At this time of year, I would like to express my sincere THANKS to all of you who support Shipley Center in whatever way you can. Those who volunteer in any way; those who contribute something extra … and just all of you who help to make Shipley Center the great place it is!
